They made rooms better, source control support, audio and gml a bit more polished, yes, but.not that much, many of those things were implemented by community in one way or another or were doable by yourself in 1.4. Don't forget telemetry in your game (can be turned off if you bought license) and telemetry in IDE (lol nope, deal with it). Instead YoYo made DnD better (dafuq?!), made UI into a shiny fewer dream of UE Blueprint/Node zealot (what the fuck?), added messy workspaces with many needless clicks, drags, zooms (if i want to waste my time clicking or scrolling, i PLAY games, not DEVELOP them), slapped pointless sprite editor (who the fuck does serious edits to In-project Prefabs and not Source files?), made licensing into always online (you don't have internet access for more than several days, well too bad, no gamedev for you). So many people were waiting it with hopes of modernized IDE UI (Unity, VS, VSC, Eclipse, JetBrains products, Monodevelop, Zerobrane etc), bindings for other, more popular languages, modern take on gml, more active and open development, etc. And then YoYo started hyping GMS2 release as a next level engine. People started thinking "hm, maybe it's not that newbieish and limited after all, UI looks outdated, but what if". But closer to the end of 1.4 development, many really good, successful and what's more important Noticeable games, made with gms 1.4 were released. Longer rant: People always looked at GMS1 as a "newbie's engine with severe limitations" or as a stepping stone to a "proper" engines like Unity. Many were expecting "Best Modern Multiplatform 2D Engine Powerful Enough for Professionals and Easy Enough for Aspiring Gamedevs", but got weird and clunky toy that in some ways felt even worse than 1.4. Tldr: They misunderstood what people were expecting and didn't play their marketing and development cards right.
